OVARIAN CANCER WELLNESS SYMPOSIUM

Hosted by the Northeast Region of NOCC, and open to ovarian cancer survivors and caregivers across the country, you will learn valuable information that could help you throughout your journey.

About the Symposium

When facing a new diagnosis, a recurrence, or defining a new normal, ovarian cancer can affect an individual’s quality of life – how they feel emotionally and physically. Our Ovarian Cancer Wellness Symposium equips individuals with knowledge, resources and support needed to make informed decisions about their care and provides opportunity for personal growth.

Dedicated healthcare professionals will share their expertise on diverse topics such as palliative care, heart health, and nutrition. The sessions will include informative presentations, with guests having the opportunity to ask questions, share their individual experiences and gain support from one another.

The Symposium is open to both survivors and caregivers. Sessions will take place through Zoom.

Session 1: Palliative Care – Is it Right For Me?
November 3, 2022
7:00 PM ET

“Palliative Care” are words that make many patients with cancer uncomfortable. Palliative care is not synonymous with hospice. It can provide relief of emotional and physical suffering at any point in a person’s disease experience. So, what is it and how can it help me? Where can I receive it? How does this specialized care help my loved ones?

Interactive discussion on Palliative Care led by Charlotte Stone, MSN, RN, AGACNP-BC Nurse Practitioner with the Palliative Care team at Lenox Hill Hospital and clinician at Northwell’s Supportive Oncology Clinic.

Charlotte Stone is a Nurse Practitioner on the interdisciplinary Palliative Care team at Lenox Hill Hospital and clinician at Northwell’s Supportive Oncology Clinic. She has advanced practice training with the palliative care and oncology teams at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and has dedicated her career to helping patients and their families cope with the stresses of living with a life limiting illness at all stages of their disease experience.

Session 2: Heart Health & Ovarian Cancer
November 10, 2022
7:00 PM ET

Advances in treatment such as targeted therapies like PARP and VEGF inhibitors are improving the prognosis of ovarian cancer but are associated with important cardiovascular side effects. As a cardio-oncologist, I work with patients and their oncologists to enable them to receive the most effective treatments for their cancer as safely as possible to optimize their health and overall outcomes. This program will cover a basic introduction to the emerging field of cardio-oncology and provide some practical tips and advice regarding some of the newer targeted therapies of relevance to ovarian cancer.

Dr. Robert Copeland-Halperin is an assistant professor at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, where he serves as the Director of Cardio-Oncology for the Northwell Health system. He is Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and serves on the American College of Cardiology’s Cardio-Oncology Leadership Council. A third-generation cardiologist, Dr. Copeland-Halperin is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Nuclear Cardiology. His goal is to enable patients to receive the most effective treatment for cancer by partnering with them and their oncologists to optimize cardiovascular health and overall outcomes.
